A few weekends ago, we needed a low-key activity for the morning. We decided to finally visit the Nature Discovery Center, which I had been planning to check out since we drove by it when rental home searching the month before we even moved here! Took me a while, hey?
So, in the morning, we tell the kids* where we are heading.
*The kids that take 3 times as long as every other family to get to the car every day when picking Leighton up from school because they need to collect acorns and sticks and weeds and rocks. They kids that climb over furniture and jump and run in the hall and kitchen and bath and, well, you get the idea. The kids that go a little nuts when cooped up in the house all day on a weekend and always behave much better after some fresh air and different scenery.
Was Riley excited? Yes. But only because she thought we were going in Daddy's car. After that, she was pretty indifferent.
Was Leighton excited? Um, not really. I believe he said something along the lines of, "So we will just walk around and look at nature and stuff and play at the playground?" Aw, you poor child having to be put through such torture!
We got there (in Mommy's car, sorry Riley!). We looked at nature and stuff (Riley begged to be carried almost the entire time until we found the bunny - but Leighton actually got into it and started writing a list of every 'nature thing' he saw and fell in love with the the pocket prairie and 'oreo cookie flowers'). And played at the playground (which they both very much enjoyed, especially the sand box).
Then it was time to head out. Told the kids. No crying. No complaining. No need to drag them away.
When Riley asked where we were going, we told her we needed to go to HEB quickly to get some food for lunch. The way she squealed and jumped up and down in jubilation, you would have thought we had just told her we were going to buy her every pink item in the world and that she would never be forced to nap again or something. The girl was ecstatic! She bounded over to Leighton and grabbed his hands and said over and over, "HEB, Yayton, HEB!" They were both in the car so fast I couldn't believe it.
Nature, smature. Grocery shopping is where it's at, folks!
There are days when going grocery shopping is indeed the most exciting thing going. I love the oreo cookie flowers. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteThey come by it honestly. It isn't a secret how much I love grocery shopping! And shopping in general :)
DeleteWe finally went there so many times that I joined. They have some great programs coming up this summer too... I'll be sure to tell you about them as they get closer.
