More Firsts

Last month we had the first day of school for both the kids, but this month we had a lot of 'firsts' as well ....

Riley had her first day of ballet!  This is also her first ever independent extra-curricular activity!  She LOVES it, and I am so impressed how well she listens and follows along.  She started out as one of the oldest in her class and they asked her and a few others to switch to another class.  She is now in the middle or younger half of the class I think, but she seems to be keeping up with the girls who had taken ballet before.  They do ballet for 45 minutes and then tap for 15 minutes.  She really loves her tap shoes!  In December they will have a little in-class show for us, and in the spring they will have a big show in a theater with fancy (and expensive!) costumes!

My friend Anne had told me about some kits you can check out from the library here that include a book and activity (and free passes to the Children's Museum!), but for some reason I hadn't looked at them during any of our previous gazillion visits to the library.  I grabbed one for us to try out, and the kids were thrilled and ask for them all the time now!  We read the book and did the art activity together and had a great time.  It was nice to have all of the items provided and prepped for the art activity!

Auntie Hannah and Sascha had brought us some Lino Lado Milk from Croatia last summer, and in my usual 'save it for the perfect moment' ways, it's been in the cupboard begging to be eaten ever since!  I finally opened it up to give the kids a fun snack of 'dips' (as they now refer to it when they request it every weekend!): apples and pretzels with Nutella, Lino Lado Milk, and Trader Joe's Cookie Butter.  Leighton loved all three, but Riley isn't a fan of 'the white one'.  All of these are a bit sweet for me to have more than a couple of, so I grab a spoonful of peanut butter for my pretzels!

Riley has really progressed with her swimming this year, even though we still have yet to get her into any lessons (her style and technique are completely her own, lol!).  She is now really confident and can swim across the pool all alone!  (Don't worry - Roy was in the pool so that she'd have some assistance if needed!)

Leighton wasn't feeling well one weekend and had been complaining of a sore ear off and on for about a week.  We finally took him into the Dr, and he was diagnosed with his first ever ear infection!  The Dr was impressed that we had gone almost 8 years (plus almost 5 for Riley) with no ear infections ever!

Not long after Leighton finished up his antibiotics (well, the ones for his ear infection - we subsequently had to take him into a pediatric dermatologist after a year's worth of trying to battle what we thought was dry skin or eczema was determined to be perioral dermatitis and he needed two prescription creams for that, one of which was an antibiotic - it was a big month at the pharmacy for us!), we had to take Riley into the Dr for an infected thumb.  Turns out that all her fingernail biting had caused an ingrown nail or something that turned into an infection.  Poor girl had a big, sore, swollen thumb that started to ooze some gunk.  She had to take some antibiotics and needed a topical antibiotic cream, as well.  The Dr talked with her about not biting her nails anymore, and you know what .... this led to another first the other day - the first day I've cut her nails since she was TWO!  She managed to figure out how to stop biting her nails at night.  We are SUPER proud of her!

This season, Leighton decided he wanted to give playing goalie a shot sometimes during their games.  He always likes to be out running around and scoring, and (like his Mama) said he didn't want to be responsible for the other team scoring so didn't want to play defense or goalie.  But this season, he asked to try it out during their second game, and he was really great!  We were all pretty impressed with how far he can throw the ball with one arm!

The kids really love going to the grocery store and choosing a few types of nuts from the bulk section to buy as a snack.  We were trying to kill some time before Riley's ballet a couple weeks ago, so I thought we'd check out the bulk section at Whole Foods for a change of scenery for their snack adventure.  They had so much fun (to the annoyance of the grumpy lady also getting things from the bulk section who seemed to not appreciate the joy of grocery stores that we have!) choosing a bunch of totally new snacks to try- and one of the biggest hits with them both were the dried cucumber slices!
