Summer Vacation Day 8 - Newton Drury Scenic Parkway, Crescent Beach, Battle Rock and Florence

This was the day that we needed to cover the most ground, but it didn't feel like it was too much driving because we made so many good stops to break up the day.

Our first stop was to see Big Tree on the Newton Drury Scenic Parkway (well, the first stop was actually a Safeway in Arcata for a few picnic supplies, but that's not all that exciting!).  We tried to see the Corkscrew Tree, but must have missed the sign for it.  We saw the elk in Elk Prairie or Elk Meadow, but didn't stop to take pictures or anything.  We heard Fern Canyon was amazing but we weren't equipped for hiking and getting wet.  And we meant to stop at the High Bluff Overlook near Klamath but I totally missed directing us there - and we had lots of driving to do anyway.

We stopped for a picnic lunch at Crescent Beach.  There was Enderts Beach right near it as well, and I wasn't sure which one to go to so we went to the first we got to on the road.  There wasn't any tide pooling since we were there half way between the two low tides, unfortunately.  But we played on the sand and Riley found some teeny tiny dried sand dollars - I couldn't find any and couldn't figure out how she was seeing them!  It was very cool and cloudy when we got there, but by the time we finished lunch and were on the beach for a bit, the clouds lifted and it was warm and sunny.

Our next stop was at Battle Rock Beach.  It was an easy stop with clean bathrooms.  The sand there is much darker.  We heard a local saying there were whales out in the morning, but we were too late to see them, unfortunately.

We stopped for a quick dinner along the way to our stop for the night in Florence, OR.  We did try to stop at a day use area for the sand dunes, but they were closed at 6 and it was right at 6 that we got there.  We loved our little hotel on the river here.  Florence was a very cute little town and we wandered for a little while.  Almost everything was closed for the day already though.  It's odd to me that things close so early!
