When we were here in June, Leighton noticed that all the fire hydrants were different colors. And for some reason, every time we drove by one he'd call out, "Put on your (fill in the blank with the color of the fire hydrant) zuit suit!" And we would have to pretend to zip it up ("Zooooooooooooot!"). And then we'd be instructed to take it off ("Zooooooooooooot!") quickly as we approached the next fire hydrant. Although, they were not called fire hydrants. Leighton pronounced it 'hydrant fydrant' and the name has stuck!
He still loves pointing them out, but luckily he has forgotten about the zuit suits! He recently came up with the idea to go for a walk to take pictures (him with his camera and me with mine - his idea, his rules!) of the different colored ones in our neighborhood, and we did it this week. It took two attempts to get them all, because our first walk on Monday was shortened due to some wagon excitement. As we were leaving the house with Riley in the stroller and Leighton on foot, Billy came out and asked Leighton if he'd like me to pull him and Riley in a wagon. He lent us the wagon they used to pull their 4 grandchildren around in. Leighton and Riley loved it, but I only wanted to pull as far as the playground and not on a 2 hour hydrant fydrant walk! We got one picture of a blue and yellow hydrant fydrant though.
On Wednesday, we set out for hydrant fydrant photo walk number two. We saw 4 more to photograph on our way to Wal Mart to get some groceries. I only remembered 2 of them and 2 were happy surprises that Leighton pointed out.
Leighton has a new found love for the Goodwill store that is on the walk to/from Wal Mart. We first went in when Grandma and Papa were here, and Papa spent a fiver to buy Leighton and Riley a wagon for playing with outside. We pulled the ice cream and Mommy's $1.97 premade, frozen pina colada drink home in it! Since then, we've stopped in at Goodwill a couple times looking for more goodies to bring home. On this walk, we found another plastic wagon for $5. Score! Now both kids can have their own and Riley can stop taking OUT all the leaves and sticks Leighton has worked so hard to put IN! Leighton also chose a few books and some new sunglasses for dress up (I am pretty sure there was a pair exactly like this in our house in the 80s!) and pulled them all the way home in the wagon. He was pretty tired when we got home. So was I. It's a long walk to Wal Mart and back, especially when you add in the time in the store and for the stop at Goodwill. We were on our feet for 2.5 hours!
i love leighton's ideas! first the lizard on the recycle bin - now the hydrant fydrant photos - excellent!
ReplyDeletejealous of your goodwill - there are no second hand stores here at all!
It is exciting to live where we have access to second hand stores. There wasn't anything good, or even much at all to choose from, in NY. I am excited for yard sale season to start up too!
