Rodeo!

Today we went to the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show.  Being there felt so much like being back at the Calgary Stampede!

The grounds were fairly close to where Roy works, so we figured rather than pay for parking or figure out the shuttle buses from various parking lots, we'd just park in his building and take the MetroRail - and it also was sure to be the most exciting option for Leighton!

We started the day by watching some Mutton Bustin'.  Leighton found it hilarious.  Riley freaked, kept pointing to the running sheep and calling them puppies (she has recently become a member of the terrified of dogs camp), and so I took her out of there!

Next Leighton entered the Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull.

And off to the Fun on the Farm we went.  Each child got a basket and then had to go through the different stations to perform various farming tasks (feed the chickens, plant and water the vegetables, milk the cow, etc).  Once each task was performed, they got a toy representation of the fruit of their labor (egg, milk, vegetable, corn, wool) that they collected in their basket and took to the mock Farmer's Market to sell.  They were given some pretend money that they then could spend in the little snack shack.  REAL snacks!  No more toys or pretend here!  Leighton chose chips and a rice krispie treat.  Riley 'chose' crackers and chips.

We had some lunch - so many fabulous options (BBQ, Tex-Mex, Cajun, etc.) in additional to the typical fairground staples.  Roy got a giant BBQed turkey leg.  I didn't take a picture, but I should have.  Would have been fun to compare it to the one I have him enjoying one at the Stampede many years ago!

Inside the exhibition hall, we gathered some animal cards at the different animal areas, saw the baby chicks and baby pigs, and then went into the petting zoo part.  The woman outside the gate warned me not to take in my papers and for Leighton to take off his ribbon because the deer would pull at it and run away, so we left them with her, bought our $3 ice cream cone full of animal feed pellets, and headed inside.  Leighton decided he didn't want to feed the animals but wanted to just throw the food on the ground in front of them.  This worked for a couple goats and sheep, but then some other ones spied our ice cream cone and one of them jumped right on me to get it.  Would have been a funny picture!  Speaking of pictures, Leighton wouldn't let me let go of his hand in there, so no pictures of him in the petting zoo.

After getting a souvenir squished penny (Leighton collects these), we hopped back on the MetroRail to get the car and come home.

We played outside a little while Roy had a work Skype date.  Riley, who didn't nap all day, was eating an apple and was so tired she rested her cheek on it and then decided the squat and eat stance was the least energy consuming!
