Could you do homework under these conditions?

We like to call this the 'sister overload torture device' and we think we could patent it for use in testing the focus of highly skilled professionals like brain surgeons and race car drivers!

Poor Leighton had to write his book report while being subjected to his sister's desire to be involved, CLOSELY, tonight.

He did a great job!

(And for anyone wondering, the book report was on Chicks and Salsa written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Paulette Bogan.  Paulette was the parent of one of the students I taught in NYC and so I was really excited to find that book in the library the other day to show Leighton.  If you haven't read it to/with your kids, you should - it's a fun one!  She also has several other great books that she has authored and illustrated.)

And this was his first KINDERGARTEN homework.  That's right, Kindergarten.  NOT pre-K.  Confused yet?  Let me explain!

After his pre-K teacher did reading, math, and literacy testing with Leighton at both the pre-K and K level last week and he got nothing wrong, she and the principal decided to have Leighton join the K class every morning for the 90 minute English Language Arts period.  (I know, Mom, I haven't had a chance to tell you yet, but I couldn't call you while you were in the wilds of the mountains on your three day hike!)  The K teacher is performing some testing of her own this week, so we are interested to see how he does.  We know his reading level has already improved well beyond the grade 1.5 - 2.5 level the librarian tested him at the first week of school.

As Riley likes to yell from the side of pool while Leighton is doing a mock-race in practice, "Go Leighton.  Yay Leighton.  Go Leighton!"

  1. I love the torture device...and oh so cute with her head right on the paper. Reminds me of when Punkin, the cat I left behind with Grandma, used to sit right on her chest when she tried to read in bed.

And fantastic for Leighton to be able to join the Kg class every day. And fantastic for the school to realize that this is a special kid who needs that and found a way to make it work.

    1. We are very pleased with the school. And proud of Leighton. And amused by Riley, aka the Punkin cat reincarnation!

i doubt i can find chicks and salsa anywhere here - but maybe leighton will read it to me via skype?

    1. We returned it to the library, but we can always get it again so he can read it to you on Skype! That was a tough book with some tough vocabulary, so I helped him read some of it. The books we get him that are in his level range he has to read all on his own though so he can get points and trade them in for free books! He is highly motivated to do his solo reading!
