Persimmon picking

The last few years, we have gone out apple picking in the fall and every year, we really enjoy it.  It was one of the things that made us sad that we were leaving NYC when we moved here to Houston.  Luckily for us, there are lots of other fruits and vegetables we can have fun picking.

When we went to pick blueberries (and ended up with blackberries instead!), the man who owns the farm let us know that we could pick persimmons in the fall.  We LOVE persimmons.  We used to watch the trees in our neighborhood in the Bronx get full of the delicious orange fruit and wish to pick some.  Instead, we'd get them from Costco!  I even happen to have a photo of one of them that Leighton made me take last year (who knew it would ever come in handy?!).

Saturday we set out to pick some persimmons.  We had thought of going a couple weeks ago but it was too hot.  Luckily Saturday was a bit cooler and we were able to there relatively early before the heat really set in.

Leighton was excited to see a Thanksgiving turkey, so we took some pictures with it.  Riley had to first ensure that Leighton had enough bug spray on before she's smile though!

Our city kids were concerned about the mosquitoes (we had the bug spray, remember, so no problem).  And the ants (don't step where you see them!).  And Leighton didn't like the grass itching his legs (I brought him long pants, socks, and shoes just in case but he refused them).  But once we got over all of that, we were off to pick!

Once we had as many persimmons as we thought we could eat before they went bad and/or we were so tired of persimmons we wouldn't want to come back to pick next year, we went back towards the barn to pay and to head to the car.  Along the way we saw the satsumas that will be ready to pick not too long from now!

And then we set out to a playground to have a picnic lunch.  Back in the city.  Where there weren't as many bugs ;)  We went to the Fire Truck Playground in Southside Place.  I had heard about it from a friend and went for the first time last week (we tried last month, but it was closed for renovations).  It is the best playground we have ever been to.  Fantastic equipment and layout.  Great shade.  Beautiful neighborhood.  We love it there!

The kids got a kick out of a little baby lizard that went down the slide before them and then couldn't figure out where to go from there!

Another fun day out!

  1. i don't think i've ever had a persimmon (actually i know i haven't).

you could all come and help us pick pomegranates though - the first ones are just ready now... the mandarins aren't far behind (and olive season is right around the corner) - i'll even supply the bug spray!
