August edition: The funny things they say

Aug 3rd
We were driving home after dark with the kids (so rare they are ever outside after dark!) and Leighton asked, "Are stars nocturnal?"

August 8th
Riley was talking (a lot!) describing a situation the other night, so Roy says, "Wow, you should like you could be a scientist!"  She replied (in a grouchy voice), "No!  You scientist."  Funny thing is that I don't think she knows that is his job - she just thought he was calling her something insulting!

August 9th
This was more of a funny thing Leighton did than a funny thing he said, but I just had to include it because I don't want to forget how funny it was.  We were at the beach and Leighton really had to pee.  Riley has recently realized that she can pee in a pool or in ocean, but it has still never occurred to Leighton.  We were a long walk from the bathrooms and he really had to go, so I suggested he pee in the ocean.  He looked at me like I was crazy.  Roy reassured him I wasn't!  So, into the water we went.  He stood there for a while asking if people would think it was weird and I told him nobody would even know and the ocean is huge and the pee would get mixed and spread out quickly and it really would be ok.  I was looking out at the other people and boats and who knows what else and turned around to see Leighton pulling down his swim shorts.  I laughed and told him that people certainly would notice if he took his shorts down and he could just pee with them on.  Now he really thought this was the craziest idea ever and didn't want to pee in his clothes.  I think he is still very confused by it a week later!

In the car today, I was telling Riley she could keep the books she just got at the store and that they aren't like library books,  She got all excited and asked, "To ever?"  I laughed and told her than yes she can keep them forever.

August 12th
I was telling Leighton and Riley that Lindsey & Charlie were nice enough to stop by on their way home from the airport last night so Charlie could deal with the dead squirrel on our driveway.   Leighton smiled and thought that was great of Charlie.  Then he asked, "Well, what did Lindsey do?" I told him I wasn't sure since we were in the bath and getting them into bed.  He also said he was glad Charlie got rid of it so it wasn't around all week until Daddy got back to deal with it so there wasn't a squirrel and fries out there.  We laughed and he realized he said fries instead of flies.  Cute.

August 12th
We were skyping with Roy and Riley said, "Daddy coming home today?  Come home early?"  She misses her Daddy while he is away this week.

Riley and Leighton sometimes play 'superheroes' ... although, neither really has a clue what that really is so their game usually just means dressing up in random costumes and running around shouting, "Super Hero!" (or "Epo Epo" if you are Riley!).  I think Leighton has recently introduced, "Don't fear <insert name of super hero of the day> is here and I will save you/protect you/find your missing sock/etc."  And now Riley's response to almost everything is, "Not fear, I ...."  So, if I drop something, she says, "Not fear, I get it Mommy."  If she needs to pee and I tell her to run quick to the bathroom, she says, "Not fear, I get there and pee in toilet."  If I tell her to finish her grapes before I get the yogurt, she says, "Not fear, I eat grapes."

August 14th
In the car today, Leighton was just talking about random things and then said, "Mommy you could be a mama queen instead of a drama queen.  Get it?  You are the MAMA and it rhymes with DRAMA so you are a mama queen."

August 14th
We were at the zoo and Leighton was looking at his map and started saying we were at 'letter F' or 'letter D' based on where we were.  I told him that's part of the coordinates and when we sat down I'd teach him how to use them.  He asked, "The corn nuts?"  So I guess I will teach him all about how to use the corn nuts on a map.

August 21/22
Riley woke me up in the middle of the night crying and saying something.  I couldn't figure out what she was saying, so I went in her room and asked her.  She told me she wanted to have a burrito for dinner.  I agreed to the request knowing she would never remember the conversation and promptly went back to sleep!

August 22nd
We were talking about something and I mentioned unicorns not being real.  Leighton asked us how that could be since the one he had at soccer was real.  I didn't clue in right away, but Roy realized that Leighton was thinking I was talking about uniforms not unicorns!

No specific date
The way Riley pronounces some words is really cute, and we all say them just like her a lot of the time now!
cucumber = toompa toompa
strawberries = straw b berries
raspberries = rasp b berries (used to be rasbee rasbee)
library = lie b berry (used to be lybee lybee)
pine-oh-apple = pineapple

August 23
Riley requested 'restaurant food' for lunch today!

August 23
Leighton: I want to be famous.
Me: Why?
Leighton: Because everyone would be cheering your name.  And your picture would be everywhere.
Me: What do you even know about being famous?  Who do you know that is famous?
Leighton: President Obama.  And the other presidents.  And movie stars.
Me: Movie stars?
Leighton: The real people ones.  Not like the character ones.
What movie stars do you know?
Leighton: None.  Do you know any?
*this conversation was so comical because it just shows how much he learns from all the books he reads on his own!

August 23
Leighton: I don't want to ever be around onions when I grow up?
Me: Why?
Leighton: Because I don't want my kids to say, "Why are you crying, Dad?"

*specific date forgotten*
I can't remember the exact date, but it was this week sometime!  Riley and I were playing with the little Disney princesses and she asked why Pocahontas had no shoes on.  Then she was quite upset that she didn't have shoes and wanted her to have some.

August 26
After dropping Leighton off at school for his first day, we were driving home, and Riley asked "Why is Leighton's seat empty?"

August 27
Today when Riley and I were running errands, she again asked why Leighton wasn't in his seat.  Then she said she wanted him in his seat.  Cute girl misses her brother.

August 27
Leighton and Riley both got little postcards from the dentist today to remind them of their appointments coming up in a couple of weeks.  I wish I would have had this on video, but Leighton turned it over to read and with every word he started getting a bigger and bigger smile.  By the end of it he was twitching with excitement.  So very funny that the kid gets that excited about a dental visit!

August 29
I read Riley 3 books every night.  Sometimes she chooses a few and then wants another so I make her trade or switch so she only has her 3.  She calls it 'witch' instead of 'switch' though.

August 30
Leighton and I were relaying an earlier conversation about his new best friend to Roy after dinner, and then Leighton took it from there with the following:
Leighton: Well, Palmer is also trying to make a girlfriend.  I don't know why he is trying to make a girlfriend not from his class - well, that's OUR class - because then he only gets to see her at recess!
Roy: Well, you know what they say.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Leighton:  (blank stare followed by shoulder shrug followed by giggle)
Me: Do you have a girlfriend yet?
Leighton: No.  Not yet.  Well, I tried to make Shelby and Clementine my girlfriends but it seems like they don't want to.
Roy: That means they really do.
Leighton: (blank stare followed by shoulder shrug followed by giggle)
Me: How are you trying to make them your girlfriend?  And what are they doing?
Leighton: Well, when we sit on the steps waiting, we always talk to each other but not all the time just sometimes.

August 30
The kids were talking about the beans they had eaten for dinner the night before and lunch today.  They were cannellini beans, but Riley kept calling them ballerina beans.

July 2013
This was from last month, but I forgot to include it then so I am including now.  When we were on the boat tour in San Antonio, the tour guide was pointing out lots of restaurants.  The kids paid no attention to the names or mention of any of them until he said something along the lines of "And this restaurant's name has something to do with an owl (wink wink nudge nudge) ..."  Of course Leighton picked up on this and read 'HOOTERS' off the sign.  He then wanted to know all about the restaurant, and since then has asked when we get to go.  The other day we drove by one and he shouted out, "Look, there's a HOOTERS!!!!"

  1. Once again you have me falling over with laughter, or I should say, Leighton and Riley are the cause of the laughter. What amazingly smart and cute children. I particularly liked the unicorns/uniforms story.

  3. He didn't last night but this morning he did and now I am reading them some of the funniest ones. Laila told me to tell you to tell Leighton that she will be his girlfriend. And there again absence will make the heart grow fonder. :)
