Summer reading programs

This summer, we have been doing our best to search out and join as many summer reading programs as we can.  The kids have been LOVING reading and going to the libraries (and the bookstores, too!) for new books.  Collecting all their prizes has been a lot of fun for them too, of course.  But both of them have such a love for reading and it's wonderful to be a part of.  Leighton has always been a huge fan of books and reading, but it took a loooong time for Riley to be interested.  All these programs, story times, library trips, and prizes have really made such a positive impact on her interest and participation in reading.

Leighton reading a chapter book to his captive audience before bed
(he is VERY much like his mother and insists on finishing a book before going to sleep!)
We found her sitting here reading ... with no clothes on!  She just couldn't wait to open up that new book!
So far, this is where we are at with all the reading programs:

Bellaire Library Dig Into Reading
There were prizes for every 10 books read up to 50 books.  Each of the books had to be checked out from that Library and were checked off on our lists when we returned them.
10 books = certificate, a little toy garden gnome, and a coupon for free ice cream at Baskin Robbins
20 books = hatching dinosaur egg and a coupon for a free burger at Whataburger
30 books = pail and shovel and a coupon for a free milkshake at Jerry Built
40 books = wiggly worm and a coupon for a free kids' meal at Berryhill
50 books = dinosaur grabber and a coupon for a free swim at the Evergreen Pool

Houston Public Library
There were prizes for 10, 20, and 30 books read.  We ended up collecting them all at the same time by the time we got there.
The kids got:
- certificate
- 2 books each
- free tickets to the circus (unfortunately, we collected a few days before it was ending so we didn't get to go)
- free tickets to the zoo
- free tickets to a Houston Astros game (for the kids and us!)

Half Price Books
For filling out a reading log in June and July, the kids got a $5 gift certificate for each month to use in the store.

Barnes and Noble
After reading a certain number of books (I think it was 8 or 10???), the kids got to choose a free book at the store.  Leighton got Captain Underpants and Riley got a My Little Pony book.

HEBuddy
After 10 books over 6 weeks and drawing some pictures on the form, we got to send it away for a prize.  We haven't gotten it in the mail yet though!

Pottery Barn Kids
We have to read books on their set lists and then we can go in for a prize.  We are still working on getting all the books from the library and from friends that we need to read.

Harris County Public Library
I wasn't sure if we were eligible for this since we aren't West U residents.  We haven't checked out that library yet.  Maybe we can have it on our list for next summer!

Scholastic
I didn't manage to find a way to sign us up without a password from a teacher.  Hopefully next summer!

TD Bank
If we fill out the form with 10 books read, we can open a new savings account for the kids and the bank will give them each $10.

Book Adventure
I forgot about this one!  I will need to read a bit more about it and then see if we can Leighton started.

Fort Bend County Libraries
This is for the surrounding areas, but I included it on the list in case anyone else we know sees it and can make use of it!

Chuck E Cheese
They have all sorts of rewards calendars you can print off and reading is one of them.  If the kids fill them out, they can take them in for tokens.  Leighton has been there a couple times and asks to go all the time.  Maybe we should let him fill one out sometime and take him in the fall after all the summer programs are over.

  1. It is so wonderful that Leighton and Riley are such avid readers and book lovers. I have been successful at reading at the beach and on the porch this summer, but the book I am trying to read before bed is going slowly because I fall asleep way too quickly.

    1. Maybe you need to take that book to the beach instead!

  2. Wow those reading programs sound amazing. I honestly don't know if we have any here as Jack is a great reader too. We just started our first chapter books - Judy Blume!

    1. I have some Judy Blume books for Leighton, too, but he hasn't read them yet I don't think. He loves mystery ones and insists on finishing one before bed every night - we will have to somehow stop that when school starts so he isn't up so late!!
