The Institute that Roy's lab is in has a job candidate who they are VERY interested in hiring. Apparently he knows that the science here is pretty hard to match, but he and his wife are proud east coasters feeling a little leery of a move to Texas so far away from bagels and family.
Enter: me.
The administrator of the building came to Roy last week to ask if we could do them a big favor and help host this candidate's wife for a day or two while he was busy in meetings. I agreed and a plan was put in motion for her to join me and the kids on an outing or two so she could see what Houston has to offer families and so I could share with her all my newly acquired knowledge about moving from NY to TX. They have a 4.5 year old daughter and a second daughter due in July.
The pressure was on. I needed to 'woo' her (consultancy fee, anyone???)!
Roy came along and we took her to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and then for lunch at Central Market. We hadn't been to the museum yet, so it was fun to show Leighton the dinosaurs and the butterfly area was extremely impressive. However, since my main objective was to talk with Esther, I didn't get to take the usual plethora of photos of the kids and everything we saw and did. Guess you will just have to take me word on it. Or come visit and see for yourself!
and? did you woo? perhaps a mojito would help?!
ReplyDeleteIf she wasn't pregnant, I would have gone the mojito route for sure!
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure they are going to hold out for a job offer close to family in NY or CT, but you never know. I did my best!
Ah the official Houston greeter! Did you tell her about the fabulous NY bagels you found?
ReplyDeleteI certainly did! I told her before she even had a chance to ask. It was like the weight of the world was lifted from her shoulders when she found out :) If it wasn't Passover, we would have taken here to try one.
