Or not, as it turned out.
Yesterday morning, we took the kids on another berry picking adventure. We got out of here at a good time, surprisingly for us, but apparently it was not early enough. By the time we made it to the Matt Family Orchard at 9:30am, they were all picked out of blueberries.
Leighton was very disappointed. So was I, but I think I did a good job at getting over it quickly and being excited to take bucket they offered to head out for blackberries instead. Leighton wasn't as easy of a convert. He doesn't like blackberries. Not any of the ones he has ever tasted ever in his life, according to him (he didn't believe me that he has, in fact, enjoyed blackberries from time to time). And he wanted to got TRY to find some blueberries. We did find a couple stray blueberries left that he could pick, but not enough to bring home to eat and bake with, as we had hoped.
There were some very large and juicy blackberries though. But there weren't many of those left either, and I think we were in the last wave of pickers to get anything at all.
Riley remembered very well from our strawberry picking morning to drop her fruit into our bucket and was very keen to do so. But she got much more tempted to sample her bounty this time around and gobbled up a few!
The orchard is only open two days a week to give the fruit time to ripen between pickings. Whoever goes on Wednesday will get a good crop to choose from. There were lots of fruits right on the cusp of being ripe and ready for picking.
We will hopefully get another chance to try for blueberries again before the season is over.
The blackberries I know have wicked thorns. You must have a special variety that allows casual picking without full body armor.
