We are on the hunt for NY and CT style pizza in Houston.
Our first attempt was met with a, "This isn't pizza. This is pizza BREAD." from Leighton. Obviously that crust was too thick and doughy. Can't even remember where it was from, but we won't try that one again.
Attempt two was at Grimaldi's in Sugar Land. For those not familiar with Grimaldi's, it is a fantastic little place tucked under the Brooklyn Bridge that always has a line up. We walked across the bridge for pizza a few times when we were living in Manhattan. I always really liked the pizza, but it wasn't one of Roy's top choices. But, when we found out there was a franchise here, we went immediately with high hopes of a pizza resembling something we would have enjoyed in NY. They are pretty serious about their pizza - they even hired a chemist to determine what exactly is in NY water so they could recreate it at all their franchised restaurants! I was impressed. Leighton was impressed. Roy wasn't sold. Two out of three ain't bad, right?!?!?
Our third attempt was at Antonio's Flying Pizza. It was ok. But not NY or CT style. The kids ate it - even Riley who usually poo poos pizza - but it wasn't something we will go out of our way to eat again.
Roy decided that Grimaldi's deserved another shot (he MUST have enjoyed it more than he was letting on. Pizza snob!) and suggested a return trip. Riley fell asleep on the way there, so Leighton and I had a lunch date while Roy sat with her in the car (we have learned sometimes it's not worth it to wake the bear, especially when it is to make her sit in a chair at a restaurant that we might want to show our faces in again). I must say, I liked the pizza the first time. But this time? I loved it! Way better. Roy agreed when I took the leftovers to him in the car, too :) Phew. It means he will drive us back there again sometime soon!
I am still searching online for the next place we can try! Not expecting to match our favorite, Frank Pepe, but hoping to find another option that is in some way similar to some of our other go-to spots in NY.
Try Star Pizza. I think that was the one I was thinking of when you mentioned this before. You're making me hungry...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Naomi! I remember you had mentioned this one now. I looked at the menu and see a NY style crust, so we will be sure to go try it out!
