If you think you are too small to make a difference

When I was in high school, my sister got me a t shirt that said, "If you think you are too small to make a difference, you've never been in bed with a mosquito!"  Every year, without fail, when it is mosquito season I think of that shirt.  Mosquitoes love me.  And Roy.  And, unfortunately for him, Leighton is a little mosquito magnet as well.  Somehow Riley doesn't seem to attract them as much as the rest of us.  Lucky girl.  When I envisioned our life with a yard here, I didn't really factor in bugs.  Duh!  And I definitely didn't think about bugs in February!  But, here we are in a much warmer climate, and we're already getting mosquito bites.  It doesn't help that when it rains, our yard seems to morph into a swamp - here is what happens when it rains 3 inches within a few hours here.

And a few hours later, we were still left with this:

The water wasn't completely gone until about 36 hours later.

Not sure this is going to work well for the gardening I was planning for!

  1. do you have a sister i don't know about because i do not remember that shirt (where did i get it? and why?!). word on the island is that lavender is a good mosquito repellent (though, i can't vouch because i think i'm allergic to lavender).

looks like you might want to get into water/pond gardening (though i suppose that won't help at all with the mosquito issues...)

  2. You got it at The Body Shop in Chahko Mika Mall! It was almost forest green and the words were all different colors. I think it was my Christmas present when I was in grade 11 or 12.

Maybe we will have to plant some lavender!

  3. The kids will probably love the yard in the rain... Just make sure you keep a hose by the back door!

  4. We are still in the rainy time of year here, but soon we will go months and months without a drop, apparently. Strange!
