Roy & I have talked many times about things/places/foods we'd miss when we left NY, and pizza and bagels always come up. After hearing for so long how NY bagels can't be recreated elsewhere because their taste and texture depend so much on the water there, we didn't have much hope for finding great bagels in Houston. Lori was even on standby waiting to overnight us some in a couple months when we felt really desperate! But, I can happily admit that we were wrong.
Last week, I was waiting in the car with the kids while Roy ran into the bank near our house. I was reading the names of the places in the little strip mall across from us and immediately was drawn to the red neon lights that read, "NY HOT Bagels". I was half-way through telling Leighton when he informed me that he already knew it was there. I thought Roy had showed it to him when they were at the bank previously, but no, he knew it was there because he read the sign too. "Mommy, I saw it before you told me. See? It says Coffee Shop HOT Bagels". Oh right. He can read. This will take some getting used to! Anyway, back to the bagels. The following day the boys went to get some in the morning, and as I mentioned, they are wonderful. Now Lori doesn't have to send us any.
(By the way, see that Woody towel? Leighton has worn that to Target, Costco, NY Coffee Shop & HOT Bagels, and on a few other errands in the last week. He is big into dress up right now!)
Verdict is still out on pizza!
bagels are one of the things i miss on a fairly regular basis (and have considered trying to make some on my own more than a few times) - really cool you found some good ones so quickly (even more cool that leighton found them first!). good luck finding your pizza place... coincidentally, we have a fabulous pizzeria just down the street and every time we eat their pizza i think 'roy would SO approve' hehe.
ReplyDeletenow i'm hungry... more snacks please!
Maybe YOU will have to overnight us pizza then!!!
ReplyDeletehaha! sadly it would take a bit longer than overnight. you'll find a place - keep leighton on the lookout!
ReplyDeleteI recently found a great bagel recipe and have been making my own! Words can not describe how delicious they are and you made them so they taste even better than a bagel shop because of it! This recipe a good base to start with and I've now branched out to making whole wheat bagels, cinnamon raisin, salt, egg, etc. Ok, sending that to you via email right now... :) Oh, and they are really fun to make!
ReplyDeleteI always have good intentions of finding a recipe and making my own, but haven't yet - when I get yours, I will finally give it a shot and will report back!
