Day 1: Houston to Texarkana
Roy had to teach a class in the morning, so the kids and I finished up our packing and walked down to Costco for lunch supplies. Then when Roy got home, we hit the road!
The first leg of our trip was a 5 hour drive to Texarkana, TX. After lunch, Leighton said he was tired and was going to nap (something he NEVER says!), and Riley (who always copies her brother's ideas!) said she was too. The sun was bright in their eyes, so they tried to create some shade, and Riley piled her tray over her head and had her blanket and stuffed animal on her lap. Leighton never fell asleep (not surprising) but Riley quickly did. I took this picture of her. So funny that her little left hand holding her envelope was the only part of her that we could see!
We stopped for gas and to stretch our legs along the way. The kids were excited to get a treat (FULL SIZE chocolate bars!) from the store like we did on the way to South Padre with Grandma and Papa this summer.
We were then back on the road for the rest of the journey to Texarkana. We went straight to the post office and federal building that straddles the state line between Texas and Arkansas.
Riley was the first one of us to step into Arkansas! And then Leighton followed.
Roy joined them next, and I was the last to put my toes over the line!
While we were there, a local woman walked by and told us that the plaque about John F Kennedy was from when he visited and her Dad was the mayor and she got to ride in the parade with him!'
The restaurant I had chosen for dinner (Pecan Point Brewing Co) wasn't open on Mondays, so we went to the back up place (Twisted Fork) instead. It was ok, but I don't think we'd rush back.
The hotel didn't let us down and was exactly as described online and in reviews! It was the Wyndham Garden Texarkana. We booked directly with the hotel because there was an online promotion and I couldn't get a sense of things from betterbidding.com to accurately try one of the few hotels on Hotwire.

You'll have to plan a trip sometime to the 4 Corners area (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Then you can use 2 hands and 2 feet to straddle 4 states simultaneously.
