We got up in the morning and were happy that the weather was a bit warmer.
We went for another lunch of Memphis BBQ. This time we went to Payne's, which my friend John insisted we go to. I had read about it, but wasn't originally planning to go there until John texted that Roseanne Cash had insisted that he go when he visited Memphis. I figured you can't really argue with Roseanne Cash (Johnny Cash's daughter. She is a friend of several of the faculty at the school I taught at in NYC. I was lucky enough to see her perform a small concert there once.)! Payne's is cash only and has barely anything on the menu. The kitchen is tiny and it is about as bare bones/no frills as you can get. But the ribs were the most amazing ribs we've ever eaten. I really wished they bottled and sold their sauce! The sauce in Memphis is definitely the style I love - it feels wrong to admit it, but the Texas style sauce isn't my favorite! I much prefer the North Carolina and Memphis style. Both places we had ribs, we ordered a full rack to share and got them half wet and half dry. I never tried any of the dry ones, but Roy loved those too!
We had considered a few different options for the afternoon, including Sun Studios (side note: Detlef's oldest son is acting in the current TV series called Sun Studios and it was fun to watch an episode with them the night before!), but in the end figured that the kids would really appreciate a day running around outside at the zoo. We got a discount on admission with the reciprocal program through our Houston Zoo membership, so that's always a bonus! It was fun to see the special LEGO animals on display - we had seen something similar at the Bronx Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, and Houston Zoo before. And it was really nice that there were some animals at this zoo that we don't get to see at our own zoo - pandas, polar bears, hippos, and penguins.
For dinner, we met Detlef at Memphis Made, a local brewery with a tasting room. I had looked up a few before our trip that were family friendly, and found this one where the pizza place next door will deliver. It turns out, it is a favorite of Detlef and his wife! Outside is also the I love Memphis mural.
We ended the night back at the house, where the kids made another campfire and finished up the s'mores supplies! The night before, Leighton had helped light the fire apparently, so this time is was Riley's turn!
