Spring Break road trip: Day 3

Day 3: Memphis

Our Memphis hotel didn't have a breakfast buffet included (there was a really nice restaurant, but we didn't want to spend a ton of money on fancy breakfast), so we planned ahead and brought cereal to have in the room.  I also had plenty of fruit in our cooler bag.

After we got bundled up for another chilly day, we went to explore Memphis a little in daylight.  Our first stop was the FedEx Forum for little Mr sports fanatic.  It was right next door to our hotel, so the kids had spotted the fun balls outside the night before and had begged to return for photos the next day.  We took pictures with every.single.ball there - I'll spare you looking at ALL of them!

We then walked up Beale to A Schwab.  I had read about it's history and knew that it had tourist souvenirs, so we knew the kids would be excited to go in!  We started with the segregated water fountains, which Roy and I had also seen on the Memphis episode of This is Us a few weeks prior.  And then it was souvenir hunting time for the kids!

We then walked up to Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken.  We met Roy's friend and colleague, Detlef and had a delicious lunch!  The kids were very interested in the jukebox!

After lunch we walked over to the Lorraine Hotel.  Along the way, we saw a patch of ice and the kids were beyond thrilled to 'skate' on it!

We didn't go into the Civil Rights Museum, which I had read and heard was wonderful, but next time when Riley is a bit older and can appreciate it more, I'd love to.  Leighton was disappointed, so I know he'd really like to go back, too.

After a quick visit to the Elvis statue (and a painted tiger - we ended up seeing a few more around the city but this is the only one we were close enough to get a picture with), we took a break at the hotel.

And then it was time for The Peabody Ducks!  We got there an hour early, as I had read that to get a spot to see, it's important to be there early, especially during busy times like Spring Break.  The kid had a great front row spot along the red carpet.  I was able to stand near them and see the ducks, and Roy went up and sat in the balcony area.  I was going to join him, but I ended up staying near the kids.  I should have given Leighton my phone to get a good video but I didn't think of it til it was too late!  I'm really glad we did it once and the kids thought it was fun, but I don't think either of them would insist on going to wait to see it again on a return visit!

We then walked back down Beale Street and looked for some of the famous music notes (kind of like the stars in Hollywood) on the way to dinner.

Dinner was at a little place called Dyer's.  I had read about the history of the grease (yes - you read that right, we chose our dining establishment for it's grease, ha!) and figured we needed to try it!  It helped that you could have milkshakes or a root beer float as part of your meal, too!

And then it was time for bed!
