I have been watching the orange on our (Red Naval Orange) tree getting more and more colorful over the past several weeks and had told the kids that we should pick it to eat on Christmas Day. Well, as you know - our Christmas plans ended up changing on the fly, so there was no Christmas orange. Today we were outside playing, watering plants, and tending to the pool, and Roy said he thought the orange looked perfect for picking. So, it was harvest time! After the kids ceremoniously picked our first ever fruit from our trees, we all shared it at snack time. It was deeeeelicious! I wish we had more than one. Maybe next year. Or in 5!

Yippeee...didn't know that fruit was actually happening this year.
ReplyDeleteAnd what does Riley's shirt say?
We had one lime and one orange, but the lime was stolen by some animal a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteRiley's shirt says 'Daddy and I agree that Mommy is the Boss' or something like that. It was a hand me down and she just discovered it in her drawer the other day. Now she always wants to be wearing her sparkly ABC shirt!
I have trouble figuring out when to pick the fruit from the fruit trees. How do you know it's ripe and ready?
ReplyDeleteI took a stab in the dark, ha! Seemed like the right time based on what I had read online for picking season. if we had lots of fruits on the trees, it would be easier but with just one, the stakes were high!

ReplyDeleteooh congrats! - our little orange tree was attacked by snails - but we are in lemon and grapefruit heaven right now (still searching for a lime tree).
ReplyDelete@naomi - i'm definitely no expert, but i know that the longer i leave our citrus on the trees, the sweeter and juicier it gets (and the skin gets much much more thin - which probably takes away plenty of the bitter).
I am scared to go see if our trees are okay after our big freeze here earlier this week. Some of the other plants are toast. I real hope the trees are ok.
