Poor Leighton wasn't able to sleep so was up reading until 7:45 in the morning when I finally convinced him to climb into bed with me and get some sleep. Roy left for his conference and the kids and I slept really late! I was up a little after 11, but Riley and Leighton slept even longer. Riley ended up sleeping 13 hours total!
Once we got going for the day, we had to go find some breakfast/lunch since we missed the hotel breakfast time. The kids devoured some croissants and muffins while we wandered up the fancy shopping street, and I enjoyed a croissant filled with brie and tomato. I wish I could have that brie again because it was the best brie I've ever had.
We walked up to the Bloemenarkt, and even though we had fun, it wasn't quite what we expected. I thought it would be endless fresh flowers, but it was mostly souvenirs and bulbs and some fake flowers, which are far from my favorite thing. But the fresh flowers we did see were gorgeous. And I wish I had a giant garden (and enough luggage space!) to plant some of the bulbs in because there were some super pretty flowers. There were a few cheese shops for tasting and a penny press machine. And giant clogs to stand in!
From the market, we walked to the Museum of Bags and Purses. The kids were very excited that they were offering free audiotours. They had seen people with them at the van Gogh Museum the day before and had wanted to try them out.
We saw these chairs at the museum and had to take a picture - they were the same ones we used to have in our house but we lost them in the flood.
We then started to walk down to the Albert Cuyp Market. I had read that there were delicious and cheap poffertjes from a stand there, and I always love markets, so it seemed like a good place to go!
We spotted a lady with some delicious looking fries, so we got those as soon as we got to the market. Since we ate breakfast/lunch so late and had snaked on lots of cheese samples, we didn't really eat lunch.
The poffertjes stand was closed by the time we got there, but there was a stroopwaffle stand with a long line, so we joined it! The woman in front of us ended up being from just outside Houston and told us she came once a week (she's a flight attendant) for stroopwaffles for her husband because these were the best she'd found in the city. Leighton was beyond excited to try one of the freshly made ones, and I encouraged him to go and order himself.
The kids were very excited to see some fresh watermelon juices, so we grabbed one of those as well. And that was lunch, along with some apples we had picked up at a little produce store along the way!
We started the walk back to the hotel. We crossed the same rainbow crosswalk we had a few times already and decided it was time to take a picture of it!
We spent some time in the garden reading and playing and relaxing while we waited for Roy to come back to meet us.
We took a cab to the train station, where we needed to then get a ferry across to the venue for Roy's work party - yes we took our kids to a dance party at 9:30pm :) We ate what we had intended to be a good and quick dinner - but it was pretty gross and overpriced and SUPER slow. Oh well! We got there in a pink taxi AND the ferry ride was fun! And Riley had a great time dancing and Leighton had fun running around outside.
The ferry ride back at night was really pretty. I just wish it lasted longer than 3 minutes!
