When you eat your smarties, do you eat the red ones last?

We had a really fun Halloween again this year (and for reference, here is the post from last year, so you can see pics of the kids' costumes from years past if you are interested!)!  I was pretty concerned that it would be a wash out (and that our pool may overflow!) due to the major storm warnings and the amount of rain that came down on Wednesday and Thursday morning.  But. we were so lucky and the skies cleared in the afternoon to give us very pleasant trick-or-treating weather.

Since Leighton always likes to have his and Riley's costume be some sort of pair or match, we had to do a little extra negotiating this year since Riley is now old enough to have an opinion (well, she has always had an opinion on everything!) that needs to be considered.  But, in the end, the kids decided on being m&ms.  I had a lot of fun sewing the costumes and was pretty proud of how they turned out.  I didn't use any sort of pattern and didn't measure a thing!

Here's a little rundown of our Halloween ....

We went to a Halloween Party at friends' on Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday, I sent Leighton some Halloween-themed foods in his lunch and snack.

Don't worry - it's edible marker!

Mean witches

eyeballs

pumpkin and black cat

ghosts

spiders

more spiders

Leighton got to wear his costume to school (so few schools seem to allow this, so this was exciting for him and a surprise for me!).  In the afternoon, I was scheduled to volunteer in his art class, so Riley and I went to the school for that.  She was so excited to wear her pink m and I surprised them both by having made a yellow one for me!

Before leaving for our trick-or-treating evening, we put out a basket on the porch for any kids that came by while we were out.  And Leighton decided he needed to make signs for it!  Those were all his doing.  Very cute.  Unfortunately, with the busy and illness-filled month of October around here, we somehow completely forgot to get and carve a pumpkin or do any decorations.  So, our house looked pretty Halloween-less to the passerby ... and I forgot to turn the light on the porch so as soon as it was dark, nobody would have though to go to the door.  Add that to the fact that we live on such a busy street, and it makes sense why we came home to a completely untouched basket on the porch!

And then it was time to head out.  And for Roy to get his blue m on, too!  He decided that if I was going to surprise him with a costume, he was going to go all the way and came out in leggings and white socks and blue & white shoes to match.  I reminded him there would be photos posted on the blog and he excitedly skipped out the door in his ensemble!  The kids were really thrilled that we were dressed up with them.  It made it pretty fun for us all.

We stopped by Lindsey & Charlie's, as they were having a little party.  Leighton was keen to get the show on the road though and Riley was crazy hungry, so we set off after a short stay.  The neighborhood seemed really quiet and void of Halloween life, so we quickly called Luke & Douniazed and went to meet up with them in our old 'hood.  We ended up meeting up with group of kids from our old street, including the new family who has moved into our old house.  It was fun to see them and to trick-or-treat together for a while.  We all had a really fun time.

We came home to a glow stick bath before putting our very happy and tired m&ms to bed.

And then it was time to pilfer inspect the kids' loot for anything good that we wanted to eat hazardous.  They didn't have too much to go through, which was nice, and they also didn't get a bunch of the weird and gross (according to me!) gummy candies - it was almost all little chocolate bars, which was also nice.

I used to love sorting (and saving) my Halloween candy.  And looking at the kids' buckets of treats makes me think of the chocolates & candies that are different in the US & Canada.  I grew up loving Smarties (and find myself singing the "When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last?" jingle from time to time ... like tonight when Riley was eating her m&ms and we were saying she was eating us as she chewed on the colors corresponding to our costumes!), and I get confused when Leighton refers to these as Smarties.  Those aren't Smarties to me - they're Rockets!  But, I certainly don't get confused about Twix or KitKat and happily welcomed his offer to share them with me this evening :)

  1. Adorable, clever, fun, colorful...good work on the design and sewing! And great job on the glow stick photos. Having crossed the border in the other direction, I always think that Smarties are a poor imitation of M&Ms. When we first moved to Canada, I would have Dad surprise me with different Canadian treats from time to time...Cadbury was new to me, but oh so quickly those chocolate delights became favorites. And remember when I made sure to buy Milk Duds in Spokane before coming home?
