Day 1 - Destin, Florida road trip

For several years, we've wanted to drive to Florida's Emerald Coast after hearing several friends talk about how nice it is.  Our friends Sarah and Sherwin gave us all the information about where they normally stay and where they eat and what they do, and it sounded so great that we booked a room at the hotel they like and planned a little road trip!

One of the fun things about driving to Florida is that New Orleans is on the way!  So we planned a night there on the way to Florida and on the way back.  Another fun thing is that it meant we got to go through Mississippi again (we had been through Jackson on our Spring Break road trip) and through Alabama - a first time in the state for all 4 of us!  The kids were really excited to head to Florida for their first time.

Here's a little (ok - I know it won't be little, but go well!) summary of our trip!

Day 1 Houston to New Orleans
I had looked to see if there was anything interesting along the way to stop at that we hadn't before, and I came across the Tiger Truck Stop - named because they actually have a tiger there.  I read a lot about it, and it seemed like there were plenty of people who opposed this tiger being there.  We decided to check it out, and now we are also firmly in the camp that believes this tiger shouldn't be there.  It had such a small space.  Pretty sad.

Our next stop was the Abita Brewery just north of New Orleans in Covington, LA.

We then drove into New Orleans from a new direction that we hadn't taken before by taking The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.  It was almost 24 miles long and apparently might be the longest bridge in the US!

We got to the hotel, relaxed and ate dinner, and then walked to Cafe du Monde for our favorite dessert!
