Spring Break post #6: Happy Birthday, Zayne & Soraya!

We met Douniazed and the kids at the playground one fateful day almost exactly a year ago.  I think it was the week before the kids' birthday (the are 2 years apart but share a birthday!) and then we had our first playdate at their house the week after.  We were excited to be able to celebrate their birthday with them this year!  My Mom came along, as she has met them before and always loves to see our friends when she visits (she got to meet Lindsey and Charlie one night on this trip too!), but the teenager stayed home and slept.  I think she was pleased I wasn't dragging her on another 8:45am departure!!

It was a super hero and princess themed party, so the kids (and adults, if they liked!) were encouraged to come dressed up.  Riley had a fantastic cape already, and I was wanting to pull out the sewing machine I was given by a friend several years ago to make pillows and figured a cape for Leighton was possible, too!  My Mom, Kirsten, and I ran to Hobby Lobby as it was closing on Friday night and dashed about choosing fabric, thread, and ribbon as they kept making announcements that they were closing in X minutes.

The fabric wasn't probably the best for me to attempt my first sewing project in about 18 years (how in the world has it been that long since high school?  Really.  How?), but it came together and Leighton LOVES it!  it's shiny and sparkly and teal.  What's not to love?!?!  The fabric is slippery and thin and the stitching kept going completely wonky.  But, again, he loves it and unless you look closely (or at the pictures, lol) you can't tell that the stitching needs some work!  He chose to pair it with the teal batik party shirt that my Mom sewed him.  Riley chose her favorite party dress and refused to wear her cape (odd, she often wears that thing everywhere!).

  1. Did you hear him telling me about his cape and how you made it for him? The boy thinks YOU are the superhero. :)

  3. Leighton is very proud of his mommy...and so he should be. I am excited to hear that Hannah has another machine. I just cut out fabric to make Kirsten a "market bag" because the one she had with her on the trip needed constant repairs. This will be black canvas on the exterior and flashy orange/yellow cotton on the inside (she requested grey and neon orange but I couldn't find exactly those options).
