The results are in

In the fall, we attended the HISD Magnet Open House to see what our options were for applying for Leighton for next year.  The next week, Riley and I went on a few school tours, and that is when I really learned about and fell for the school we've now bought a home to be zoned to.  Before we bought the house, however, I submitted a magnet application to this and 2 other schools.  I knew the chances of getting in were slim since they are all in such high demand, but it doesn't hurt to try!

As a second part of school applications, you can have your child tested for the gifted and talented program.  We were hesitant to get Leighton tested at first because we wanted to give him as much time as possible to be prepared to do well on the tests.  We just weren't sure if he'd qualify.  I think my Mom laughed at me when I said this.  But, to be honest, we know he's a little smartie pants and can read well above his grade level, but we didn't know if that would translate to performing well on a gifted and talented test because we had no idea what it entailed.  But, with some enthusiastic encouragement from his teacher and the Magnet Coordinator at his current school, we sent in our form to have him tested.

Well, this past weekend was a big weekend in Houston.  All the Magnet acceptance letters and gifted & talented testing results were sent out. Here's what our letters said:

1. We got accepted to his current school.

2. We are #225 on the wait list at one of the schools we applied to.

3. We are #295 on the wait list at the school we are now zoned to.  Good thing we don't need to Magnet in anymore and can just go register with proof of our new address!

4. And, he will be entering into the G/T Neighborhood Vanguard Program at our zoned school.  He amazed us with his performance on the test.  He scored above the 90th percentile on all the sections and was in the 98th or 99th for most.  Each section was given a point value based on the percentile.  In total, there was a possibility of 100 points.  Leighton got 100!  I am a proud Mommy (totally bragging, but it's my blog, so I am allowed!!) and a relieved one, too.  I was really hoping he'd enter into the program in K in the fall.

  4. I still want to know if Lovett school is named after the astronaut. Tonight we watched the opening night baseball game between the Rangers and the Astros and Lyle Lovett sang "America the Beautiful." Maybe the school is named after him. And the Astros won!
