From nought to naughty

On Friday, Riley and I set out for a busy day of fun and errands to keep her busy and awake - I was going out for dinner with some friends and the reservation was for 7:15, so the plan was to have Riley skip her nap so she'd be super tired and fall asleep a little earlier than usual.

First stop was playgroup at the Y.  We played and she ran around and had a great time.  Then it was into the car for what should have been the first of many snacks.  She gobbled it up.

Second stop was Central Market.  We hadn't been in a really long time, and she was so excited to pick out her lunch from the prepared foods and salad bar.  She stood in line with her food and gave it to the cashier.  It was very cute.  She chose to sit at the high table, so we climbed up and got set to start eating.  First we stopped to take some pictures on my phone to send to Daddy though.

After one bite of watermelon, she stopped eating.  She got quiet.  And she wanted to sit on my lap.  And that's when I felt her head.  It was a little warm, but nothing alarming.

Off to stop number three.  Car wash. My car was in desperate need of a wash and vacuum.  Extremely desperate.  I thought I had found a good place to go - where they washed the car and we got out and watched.  Um, no.  We stay IN the car while it goes through the wash.  Hoooooboy.  First obstacle was for Mommy to drive onto the little conveyor belt exactly where they needed me to.  Easy peasy (yay me!).  Second obstacle was keeping Riley calm while she asked over and over to get out.  We held hands, and she shut her eyes for a bit.  But, these GENIUSES use a rainbow of teal, pink, and yellow bubbles to spray over your car - and when I saw that coming, I got her to open her eyes!  She liked that part.  Would have loved it if she was feeling her normal 100% self.  And the rest of it was a non issue.  Phew.

Stop four was The Galleria.  I had some shopping to do and I knew she'd want to run around in the play area.  We did some shopping, and she was excited to try to play, but after a few little bursts of energy, she wanted to get going.

Stop five was getting Leighton from school.  Riley fell asleep in the car before I even started driving out of the parking garage to get there.  When I got her out, she woke up, and I could tell she was now really not feeling great.

Stop six was Kroger.  We needed to get snack for Leighton's soccer team and groceries for a fast dinner for the kids and Roy.  Frozen pizza was Leighton's second suggestion when I told him I didn't have time to make calzones as per his first suggestion.  On the way out, we saw they were BBQing up some ribs and turkey legs.  We thought it would be fun to get one for Roy.  I gave Leighton the cash and he waited in line, ordered, and paid all by himself.  Such a big boy!

And finally, we were home.  Riley was oscillating between fine and sick.  By dinner, we took her temperature and knew she had a fever and needed to take some medicine.  That's always a good time!  She did take it though, and went to sleep and I headed out for dinner.

Saturday morning her fever was still there.  But the mention of Roy and Leighton going to Lowe's or Leighton's soccer game brought her to tears.  Big, crocodile tears.  So, we all piled in the car to get what we needed at Lowe's.  Then home to cut up oranges since it was our snack day.  And back in the car to the game.  She was eating and decently perky.  Probably only because we made her take more medicine though.  Usually we don't let our kids around other kids for 48 hours after a fever ends, but we figured we'd take her and she'd just sit with me in a chair anyway, so she wouldn't be in contact with other kids.  She cuddled me and fell asleep a little.  Even while we were cheering and the kids were all around her grabbing oranges!

She woke up from her afternoon nap early and with a really hot head.  And she was crying and a complete mess.  As low as she had been the whole illness.  She wouldn't take more medicine though.  Eventually she ended up falling asleep on me for a while.

When she woke up, she was being chatty and seemed maybe a bit better.  Until I felt her head.  It was H.O.T.  I took her temp.

Yes, you are reading that correctly.  104.8 degrees.  That's the highest temperature our kids have ever recorded, I think!  And you'd think that would have been Riley's lowest point, but she really seemed better.  Odd!  We did threaten her into taking some Tylenol at this point though.

And then, she was her complete, normal self.  Naughty and all.  From nought to naughty in record time!

Today she still had a fever but had a great appetite and played all day.  And refused to nap.  Don't most kids sleep extra long for naps when they are sick and not skip them?!?!

  1. Honestly I don't know how you do it...never mind the kids napping; I would need one myself! I am glad Riley is feeling better.

  3. You know, H is like Riley... doesn't sleep much when she's sick for some reason. I bet you were exhausted. And all those errands!

    1. I think most of my days include that amount of errands - I spend far too much time spending money!!!
