Last year, we were perplexed by the yellow fruits growing on the tree in our yard and had no idea what they were or if they were edible. My Dad may have even plucked one off, opened it up, and tasted it before we knew the answers to those questions! We finally found out, however, when I saw a picture of them in an ad from a garden center. Loquats. Ah, yes, loquats. Never heard of them!
Shortly after, our landlady came over and was delighted to see the tree. They hadn't owned the house the previous spring and didn't realize the tree was there. She knew the tree/fruit by a different name, but was delighted to pick some to take home because they ate them all the time when they lived in Israel. The squirrels got most of the fruit, but we sampled a few from our tree, lots from our friends' tree, and even some from a tree by the side of the road when we were out for a walk one day. Leighton and I love them!
So, when we moved to this house, Leighton asked if we had a loquat tree, and I was sad to tell him we didn't. But, then I was between our house and then neighbors' house one day and noticed the familiar fruits starting to grow on a tree. We DO have loquats! And our neighbor on the other side has at least two trees as well ... and they both hang over the fence to our side. I was very relieved to share this with Leighton because he had been disappointed we were without loquats of our own in this house.

I have never heard of a loquat. What do they taste like?
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to describe it! When you peel it, the flesh is a white/translucent color. It's sweet. Um, I've got nothing!
