Grandma & Papa's visit: Part 2 (New Iberia and New Orleans)

To finish off our visit with Grandma and Papa, we rented a minivan and drove to New Iberia and New Orleans for a few nights over the Memorial Day long weekend.

Our first stop was at Buccee's so that Grandma and Papa were able to enjoy the true Texas road trip stop!  There was a lot of rain on our drive there, but we got to see some rainbows!  Even a double rainbow, which I've never seen before!  We had a fun dinner and then watched the basketball game in our giant room.

It also rained HARD when we were at The Tabasco Factory.  But we still managed to see all the different areas, and it was nice that it wasn't as hot as the last time we visited!

We stopped in Morgan City for lunch.  Papa was really excited to taste cajun food, so I had tried to find some places where he could sample lots!  Lunch was at Rita Mae's kitchen - a converted house with just a few tables.

Leighton had fun teasing Riley while she was unaware and sound asleep!

We went to Mardi Gras World once we arrived in New Orleans.  We had never been, so it was nice to experience it all together.  The rain started again - HARD - while we were there, so we had to skip out on our next plan of the day, and decided to just head to the hotel.

For dinner, we went to a gumbo shop where we were able to taste more cajun food!

I was taking a picture of Leighton with Grandma and Papa ...

... and Riley photobombed them ...

... and then Roy jumped in to do the same!  So glad I caught it all on camera!

We then took them to Cafe du Monde, but not the Jackson Square location downtown that we love since we were staying out in Kenner.  This location had parking, air conditioning, and un-busy clean bathrooms, so a totally different experience!!!  The beignets were still delicious!

The next day we spent time walking around the French Market and the French Quarter.  We had lunch while listening to live music, but the line at Cafe du Monde was way too long to go have beignets.  We had never seen a line there in any of our visits, but I guess mid day on a long weekend makes for a big crowd!  We decided we'd head back out to Kenner and go back to the suburban location of Cafe du Monde for our beignet fix of the day!

Riley swam in the pool, Leighton and Roy watched some sports, Papa napped and watched sports, and then we all got together in our room for take out dinner and the Rockets/Golden State game.

In the morning, we dropped Grandma and Papa at the airport and then started the drive home.  It was great to get going early and to have a head start out of town since we were already in Kenner.  We noticed traffic getting heavier after we stopped for breakfast along the way and were glad to get across the bridge in Baton Rouge before the masses!  We stopped for some ice cream at a place in Rayne, where I had read had the world's largest gummy bear.  It was huge!

And then we arrived back in Houston, returned the rental car, and got ourselves ready for the last week of the school year!
