Summer vacation day 4: St Joseph, Paw Paw, and Ann Arbor, MI

We drove along the edge of Lake Michigan in the rain to cross into Michigan and stop in St Joseph for a carousel ride (see if you can spot the horse Leighton refused to sit on out of deep respect for Grandma!!) and pizza for lunch.  Due to the weather, we didn't get to see Lake Michigan looking pretty on this side of the lake and didn't go play in the water.

We made a stop for a wine tasting along the way to Ann Arbor in Paw Paw!  It was a brand new tasting room they had created, and we loved the atmosphere inside.  They also offered sparkling juice tastings for the kids while we did our wine tasting.  SO brilliant!!

We made a very fast stop for donuts (not very good and not worth the stop) and then finally we were onto Ann Arbor.

We took some time to relax in the hotel room (one of our top favorites of the trip!) and then decided we should start thinking about dinner.  None of us were starving after late afternoon snacking and our big lunch, so we decided just to go to Trader Joe's for some simple picnic dinner supplies and cereal.  We then made a last minute decision to dash to the U of M Campus to see it since the forecast for the following day was for lots of rain.  We didn't get to spend too much time exploring, but we managed to make it to the school store before they closed and to see some of the highlights around campus, including my Great Uncle Tony's sculpture.  Unfortunately, it was in the middle of an area getting renovated so we couldn't get close to touch it - the exact same scenario as when we went to see the one in NYC a couple years ago!  Such bad luck!  There was a summer concert going on and the whole town was buzzing.  Such a wonderful feel to the place!  It was starting to get dark and all of a sudden we were noticing fireflies all around the Quad.  I was so excited!  I had really hoped the kids could get to see some on our trip!!  Roy caught a couple for them to look at and it reminded me of when Leighton was a little guy and we caught some for him when we lived in the Bronx.  On the drive back to the hotel, we went past the football stadium so Leighton could see it.  We managed a few pictures right before it was completely dark out!

  1. Good choice, Leighton, of appropriate animal to ride on the carousel! Ann Arbor is another place I would have loved to visit with you.
