The kids always love breakfast at the airport!
And we usually remember to take a picture when we get on the plane ...
When we landed, we took a couple MKE photos and picked up our rental car (a huge highlight for Riley - this girl LOVES rental cars!) that we would have for the next 17 days!
Then we headed for lunch. My first surprise for everyone was the name of the street that it was on:
I had read that frozen custard was pretty popular in Wisconsin, and Kopp's came recommended by many reviews and blogs online, so that decision was easy considering it was close to the airport! We got some burgers and custard and sat outside by the fountains. It was the first of many meals that we were able to enjoy eating outside, which is rare in Houston in the summer!
After lunch, we drove past downtown Milwaukee to the suburb or Shorewood. This is when my mom moved to when she was little and where she went to school! We saw the house she lived in, her elementary school, and her high school!
It was then time to touch our first Great Lake of the trip! We had all touched Lake Michigan before while in Chicago, but this was our first touch of this trip and in Milwaukee! There was a small beach and park in Shorewood, so we went there because I was worried it would be hard to find parking near the bigger beaches down in Milwaukee. We did drive by them though ... and loved how they looked!
After the beach, we found our hotel downtown. Riley was beyond thrilled to find it had a jacuzzi right in the bedroom!!
We wanted to walk and see the Bucks stadium and find dinner, so off we went. We found a few other fun things along the way, saw the old Bucks stadium, the new and under construction Bucks stadium, and watched a bride lift up for boats to go through! We even came across a Wisconsin Walk of Fame, which was really cool and something I didn't come across in any of my research.
Our original dinner plan didn't work out ... a bit too much of a party scene on the street where it was, so we found a brewery that was more family friendly instead.
By then it was dark, and we were tired (even if the kids were too excited to watch TV to admit it!), so it was time to go back to the hotel and get ready for bed (but first another jacuzzi bath for Riley and some TV watching!).
Oh how I wish I was there with you. Thanks for taking the photos of the house, schools, and beach in Shorewood. There weren't any fancy steps at the beach when we lived there...just sand switchback paths so you got full of sand on the way back up to the car. And what a cool hall of fame to find.
